I recently went to my first "Spiritual but not Religious" small gathering of women seeking...something. Spiritual growth, support, like-minded company, and inspiration, among other things.

I have been wanting to work on a women's empowerment chant that is more accessible to others than the archetype chant I wrote about my personal journey. Specifically, I wanted this to be sing-able as a round.

One of my challenges with this type of writing (that is, writing a melody for people other than myself) is simplifying. When I write for my own voice, whatever notes pop into my head are fine. But now I am writing with the intention that a group of non-singers can easily learn and share this piece.

Version one was way more complicated than it needed to be. And honestly, for this type of chanting, simple is not about vocal ability so much as it is about being able to focus, possibly to trance, to be as one.

The version I share with you today is a few drafts away from the original, and I believe carries the message just as strongly, while being accessible to anyone to learn.
