Dije Que No

about

I'm returning this week to the "Amazing Women" theme with #6 in this series.

The song is written about Joan Baez, and sung as if by her in the first person. In addition to her musical career, she has been a life-long activist, and I wanted to capture some of her passion and causes in the song. While the things she fights for are too numerous to list here, I chose 3 specific causes she has championed as a focus for the verses: racial equality, amnesty international, and climate change.

The majority of the recording is in Spanish, and I'm including the English translation here for anyone interested.

Verse 1:

They asked me to come and sing

To share my gift.

They asked me not to notice

How they barred my brothers and sisters

For the color of their skin.

They asked me not to notice, and I said no.

Chorus:

I said no, I see your injustice.

I said no, I see your fear.

I said no, I see your greed.

An I will use my voice to speak and to sing.

For all those who see and are silenced.

For all those who cannot yet see.

Verse 2:

They asked me to share my stories:

Old tales of love and death.

They asked me not to notice

How they killed my brothers and sisters

Who could not raise their voices.

They asked me not to notice

And I said no.

Chorus repeats

Verse 3:

They asked me to travel the world

To offer my point of view.

They asked me not to notice

How they threatened my brothers and sisters

With the looting of the Earth.

They asked me not to notice

And I said no.

Chorus repeats.
