2 Step Ferry

about

Last month I took a trip with my husband and our friend down to Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. In between scheduled cave tours, (and the caving was amazing, but that's a different story), we were exploring some of the above-ground hiking trails in the park. On our second day, we wanted to check out a different area of the park, so we picked up a map from one of the park rangers and put the info into the car GPS.

Oddly, while our destination was only about 2-3 miles away, the directions were showing 30 minutes to get there. And then we realized that we needed to take a ferry across the river to reach the North side of the park. I was expecting a bit of a hassle- waiting for the scheduled ferry trip, filing onto the ferry with the other cars, paying whatever the trip fee required...

As it turned out. There was zero hassle. We drove down the road until we were about 50 yards from the river, and there was a gate across the road. As soon as we approached, the gate began to swing open. We drove onto the Green River Ferry (pictured above). It will hold 2 cars. Maybe. The ferry began moving as soon as we were on, and crossed the river in approximately 30 seconds. No charge. No wait. It was the shortest and most adorable ferry I've ever experienced.

I loved it so much, I wanted to write a song about it. And the idea that came to me was "2 Step Ferry", which of course had to be a country line dance. Not my usual wheelhouse, but you know I like to try new things! I hope you have as much fun listening to the song as I had writing it, choreographing (yes, I did the dance while I was singing), and riding the ferry!
